Management of diaphyseal fractures of the limbs in adults at the Ebolowa Centre Regional Hospital: technical indications and results

Introduction: The treatment of diaphyseal fractures is well codified. The aim of this study was to examine the epidemiological, diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of diaphyseal fractures of the limbs.
Materials and methods: This was a descriptive, retrospective study at the Ebolowa Regional Hospital Centre (CHRE). Records of patients treated from 1st january 2021 to 28th february 2024 were included. Data were collected using a survey form. Analysis was
performed using SPSS version 25.0 software.
Results: The prevalence of diaphyseal fractures was 19.2% (171/888). One hundred and forty-six cases were included. The mean age was 40.4±17.8 years, with a sex ratio of 1.9. Students were in the majority (26.7%). Road traffic accidents (67.5%) and domestic accidents (21.4%) were the main causes of injury. The fractures were closed (71.9%) and located in the middle third (56.1%). Surgical treatment with screw plates was performed (46.5%).
Conclusion: Diaphyseal fractures of the limbs are frequent and serious at the CHRE. They are usually closed. Screw-plate surgery is the most common treatment.
